Cannabis or Cantabis? How to Avoid the Possible Pitfalls of Marijuana

Is cannabis bad for you?

No one has ever died from smoking Cannabis. It’s pretty much impossible to overdose from it and it’s not physically addicting like nicotine is. And, It has tons of medical properties as well.

There are people I know that can smoke all day and get all their work done. Some people will smoke a little bit and be out for the rest of the day.

It’s not the what, but rather, the WHY. Cannabis itself isn’t bad for you. The downsides to cannabis come from WHY you smoke so it’s important to be mindful of your decisions. For example:

Scenario 1: You have a bunch of work that you need to do for school. You’re a bit stressed but you push through and get it done. Now you’re free and there’s nothing stressing you out. You’re feeling accomplished and satisfied so you roll up a nice joint and bump the new Kanye or watch Curry killing it on the court.

Scenario 2: You have a bunch of homework to complete and it’s stressing you out. Instead of dealing with your stress by getting your work done, you decide to smoke instead and watch T.V. You put off doing your work for the last minute and cover up the guilt with cannabis.

In the first scenario, you’re smoking as a reward for being productive and getting your work done. This is healthy and responsible. The reward probably pushes you to do your best work and try harder. And then when you’re done, there’s a huge burden lifted from your shoulders. You feel good about yourself and you’re able to relax and truly enjoy smoking.

In the second scenario, you’re letting stress and fear dictate your life. Stress is your mind telling you something is wrong and that you need to do something about it. Instead of dealing with your problems, you choose to smoke to avoid thinking about it. This is irresponsible because you’re just prolonging the stress and getting your priorities mixed up. You’re stuffing it in the closet and allowing it to snowball into even more stress. I don’t think cannabis makes you lazy, but it does make it easier to deal with negativity and boredom, allowing you to be lazy without feeling too bad about it. In this scenario, smoking is actually harming you.

When I first started smoking a lot, I did it because of all the awesome, laid-back people I was meeting through group cyphs and all the interesting conversations we would have. This was good because I was still being productive and constantly learning. I wasn’t using cannabis as a crutch or a distraction.

Over time, I got a bit lazier and fell to a lower level of consciousness. Instead of dealing with my problems straight on, I would smoke to distract myself without even realizing. It was a form of self-sabotage and procrastination.  At this point it became a crutch and I wasn’t smoking responsibly so it wasn’t nearly as enjoyable.

I started being mindful of why I was smoking. I would ask myself if I really wanted to smoke or if I was just looking to numb or distract myself. Today, I’m back to smoking productively as a reward, instead of a crutch. Once in a while I still use smoking to procrastinate but I try not to let it become a habit or too destructive to the progress of my goals. Cannabis is harmful if you allow it to become harmful. The same can be said for most things. Video games aren’t necessarily bad for you, but if you’re using them as a crutch to escape reality, that’s when it becomes harmful.

Smoking is much more enjoyable when you do it for the right reason. Marijuana is an amazing plant with miraculous properties, but anything can be abused. Be mindful and smoke responsibly!
